The Power Of A Smile

I was at the grocery store the other day, in line to buy some vitamins and a chapstick (which I lost about 4 hours later) and when I got up to the cashier, smiled and asked how her day was going. She got so excited, and told me that that simple act had made her day. I hear all the time that a smile can drastically improve the day of someone who may be struggling, and it is so true. I love when people smile at me. It makes you and the person you’re smiling at feel that much better, helping to know that there is some good and some happiness in the world.

With all the sadness, devastation and hatred going on in the world, sometimes it’s good to take a step back and think of others. But first, we have to take care of ourselves. We cannot fill other people’s metaphorical cups until our own is filled. Take some time to remember how much you matter. It’s not always easy, I have been feeling down in the dumps and have been working so hard to remind myself that I matter and that I can do whatever I set my mind to, and now I want to share that with you!

Not every day is a good day but there is something good in every day. I heard a story recently- someone was really struggling with being positive, and would get really frustrated, especially when driving to and from work. It was suggested to them that they look for five things along their drive that made them smile or made them happy. Instead of focusing solely on someone who cut them off, or the guy that was following them a little too closely, they started focusing on cool things they saw on the drive. Maybe they saw an amazing car, or someone waved to them as they passed. Their favorite thing to see was the hawks that flew around a certain area of the freeway. Soon, instead of dreading the daily drive, they would get excited to see the hawks that would fly by.

Life is hard, regardless of who you are or where you’ve come from, or what your situation in life is. Everyone has struggles, and we all have to push through this life together, and it makes it easier when we can atleast try to do it with a smile on our face.

Find your hawk, do what makes you happy, and share a smile. Life is too short to let things that are out of our control affect us. It’s the little things in life that make the world go round, and make the days a little brighter. And if we can be that little thing to someone else, why would we be anything short of our best, brightest and happiest self?

You can change the world. You really can.
